Cy Hutchinson at Queen’s Park Gallery
Our KAC GFA “Barbados: Past Present Future” Exhibition Favorite Art winner, Cy Hutchinson’s full exhibition at Queen's Park Gallery.
His exhibition, “A Collection of Pointless Objects,” features a great, narrative collection of striking sculptures and art pieces blended richly toned woods — including Barbadian Mahogany — and other exotic materials.
On November 2 the gallery hosted an evening featuring the artist himself, offering my very first opportunities to not just meet Cy in person, but to take in and admire his organically beautiful and thought-provoking pieces. Seeing these pieces live and up close offered the chance to appreciate the weight and space of each piece, their collective and individual editorial, the cohesive contrast of wood and metal objects, the line and curve decisions, and the, to me, circular narratives that nicely provide new perspectives with every viewing.
Kudos to both artist and gallery for providing such a rewarding live art experience. The exhibition ends soon, running through Saturday, November 4th, so if you’re an art-fancier yourself but haven’t found time to visit Queen’s Park Gallery, Cy Hutchinson’s “A Collection of Pointless Objects” showing was well worth making even quick time for.
“CY HUTCHINSON: A COLLECTION OF POINTLESS OBJECTS
Cy Hutchinson is a Barbados born artist producing three-dimensional works.
Known primarily for working with a large variety of local woods, Cy produces pieces using both natural and man-made materials often incorporating hand-shaped/-sculpted metals and other exotic elements into his projects.
His love for working with his hands led him to attend Rycotewood College in England from 1994 to 1998 where he earned a National Diploma and Higher National Diploma in Furniture Design and Making.
Cy's work is influenced by Nature's designs along with the actual materials he works with. These influences as well as elements from primitive, tribal and organic forms are present in his finished work He especially relates to the beliefs of Constantin Brancusi and George Nakashima of using shapes that represent the essence of a form or object and treating materials with utmost respect.
The attention to detail and high level of surface finish is consistently recognized by those who view his work.
He takes much time in selecting the correct piece of wood for each project, positioning and aligning the grain to ensure that the overall work is cohesive.
Cy's work is widely appreciated and has been exhibited and awarded both locally and internationally."
