Cy Hutchinson is a Barbados-born artist producing three dimensional works.
Known primarily for working with a large variety of local woods, Cy produces pieces using both natural and man-made materials often incorporating hand-shaped/sculpted metals and other exotic elements into his projects.
His love for working with his hands led him to attend Rycotewood College in England from 1994 to 1998 where he earned a National Diploma and Higher National Diploma in Furniture Design and Making.
Cy’s work is influenced by Nature’s designs along with the actual materials he works with.
These influences as well as elements from primitive, tribal and organic forms are present in his finished work.
He especially relates to the beliefs of Constantin Brancusi, George Nakashima and James Krenov of using shapes that represent the essence of a form or object and treating materials with utmost respect. Other influences come from the work of Pierre Soulages, Barbara Hepworth and Zaha Hadid to name a few.
The attention to detail and high level of surface finish is consistently recognized by those who view his work.
He takes much time in selecting the correct materials for each project, positioning and aligning the grain when using wood, to ensure that the overall work is cohesive.
Cy’s work is widely appreciated and has been exhibited and awarded both locally and internationally.
